Artwork Information
Teodoro Ghisi created the designs for his brother Giorgio’s engravings of Venus and Adonis. Originally the figure of Venus was completely nude, but after the Council of Trent Pope Clement VIII deemed the print too lascivious. A swathe of cloth was added to her lower torso, possibly by a later engraver, as the plate was quite worn by the time this print was made. (Venus Rising, 2005)
