Artwork Information

The Impressionists were unusual in that they did not come from a familial artistic tradition, hence they were free to make their own way without having to meet the expectation of their parents and relatives. One way that this was manifested was in their choice of ordinary country people as valid subject matter. They also tended to marry outside their class and milieu, which relieved them from a further source of pressure to conform. (Impressions of Time and Place, 2002)
