Described as a direct precursor of Venetian 18th-century styles, Molinari's voluminous, firmly modelled forms and rich, deep colours remain rooted in the Baroque. Although his early work reflected the influences of Neapolitan naturalism and tenebrism, by the 1680s he had developed his characteristic manner of depicting figures in graceful poses. This scene shows Abraham's servant Eliezer approaching Rebecca with gifts appropriate to her position as Isaac's future wife. The theme was regarded as a prefiguration of the Annunciation.
