Castello was influenced by the villa decorations of Luca Cambiaso in Genoa, as well as by Raphael and Giulio Romano. Although much of Castello's work was centred on architectural decoration on a very grand scale, he also produced intimate votive works such as The Crucifixion, which reflects Counter-Reformation teaching which stressed the suffering of Christ and his followers in a manner designed to touch the spectator's emotions.
