Artwork Information
Blake was strongly opposed to formal religion, believing that it stifled the natural development of imagination. His intense spiritual optimism was anathema to his friend and mentor Henry Fuseli, yet the latter was very influential on Blake's visionary style. In The Book of Job he expressed both the freedom and the subtlety of his personal interpretation of the Bible, incorporating his philosophical concerns with the depths and ecstatic heights of the human spirit.
