Artwork Information

Finding it difficult to gain employment as an illustrator during the Depression years, Smith taught herself textile design and printing, producing fabrics for stores such as Heal & Sons and Peter Jones in London. Her friendship with Frances Hodgkins may have influenced her decision to turn her hand to textiles. On her return to New Zealand Smith again took up this occupation as it suited her situation as the mother of a young child. (Flaunt, 2003)
