A fortified town or village called a Hippah [pā], built on a perforated rock at Tolaga, New Zealand [Actually Te Whanganui a Hei Mercury Bay, with the pā Te Puta o te Paretauhinu.]
1773
Artwork Information
Note: location incorrectly identified as Tolaga Bay [Ūawa]. It actually depicts the pā Te Puta o te Paretauhinu at Te Whanganui a Hei, Mercury Bay, on the Coromandel Peninsula. The error of identification occurred in the translation of the drawing into an engraving. Spöring’s original drawing refers to the location as ‘Opuragi Bay’, his transcription of Purangi which is another name associated with the area.
