Artwork Information

Inspired by an advertisement in the New York Times from 1964, the bathrobe went on to become another of the distinctive signature motifs in Jim Dine's work, one he has returned to for nearly 40 years. This stencilled work was inspired by Edvard Munch's jigsaw style of making prints. Dine drew the outline on hardboard, which was then cut into 12 parts. This puzzle was then placed over a large sheet of paper with one section at a time lifted and spray-painted. The work was then hand finished by the artist.
