Artwork Information
Referring to his highly detailed and realistic portrayal of nature, Charles Blomfield explained in an 1883 letter to the editor that it was his duty as an artist not only to paint well, ‘but also to bring into prominence the peculiar beauties of our island home.’ Quoting an American writer he added ‘never before has there been a nobler opportunity afforded the artist to aid in the growth of his native land…’.
