Artwork Information
Originally projected onto the windscreen of a 1997 Mitsubishi Legnum, the film EGOLANE, 2022–24, features the car and a lone female protagonist as its main characters. The vehicle in this installation is conceptualised as a fully autonomous car, invoking a yet-to-be-realised technology that looms large in our public imagination as a symbol of digital potential and fantasy. The film follows the pair’s journey through different terrains, locations and emotional states, and is captured through an assemblage of digital video, animation and dashcam footage found online. As a kind of ‘road’ or ‘car film’, EGOLANE explores these genres while they are on the verge of being transformed by technological innovation, and within the context of Carpenter’s wider practice is attentive to the stories and subjectivities that emerge from their development.
