Artwork Information

Edouard Vuillard had a classical training but was persuaded to join the Nabis by Maurice Denis. The Nabis were influenced by Puvis de Chavannes, using overlapping planes, no perspective, a lifted horizon, simple contours and unbroken colour. Maillol was a follower of the Nabi theory of aesthetics. Above all their works were constructions hinging on 'plastic rhythms rather than image of material world'. Vuillard remained faithful to many Nabi concepts for the rest of his life.
