'Every composition which I have attempted has had its origin in my own brain, my idea always being to give expression to my thoughts of a subject through the medium of design, instead of words. No one could be more willing than I am to admit that the efforts have not satisfied me, but who is there to say things for this reason? The main idea behind the composition in question is the injustice done to youth, by the decision of those older generation to have wars and send their sons to be slaughtered and maimed, while many grow fat on the proceeds. Financiers, money- grubbers, politicians, the thoughtless type of patriotism, are contributing factors which I have tried to suggest, with helpless youth being torn from equally helpless youth and home.'
