Artwork Information

James Nairn was a leading member of the Glasgow Boys, a group of Scottish Impressionists. In this work, painted directly from nature, the flaming sunset contrasts with the cooler tones of sea and sky. The silhouette of Kaikoura’s wharf adds drama

to this Impressionist scene. Nairn frequently produced variant paintings of a subject under diverse atmospheric conditions. His daytime study of the same Kaikoura wharf is adjacent.
