Artwork Information
Packaged in a Plexiglass box, 'Moonstrips Empire News' comprises 108 sheets arranged in random order. Some of these spectacular prints are collaged texts presented in various colours, sizes and formats. Others include collaged screenprints that merge strong graphic designs with an iconography derived from comic books and the mass media.
These prints highlight Paolozzi’s lifelong fascination with
popular culture, technology and American consumerism.
He believed that art should reflect contemporary culture.
Combining unrelated images, such as Mickey Mouse and the
head of Michelangelo’s David, the artist demonstrates what he
called the ‘schizophrenic quality’ of modern life.
