Artwork Information
Louis Markus left Warsaw for Paris in 1903, where he initially painted in an impressionist style. In 1910 he met Braque and Apollinaire (who dubbed him Marcoussis after the name of a village outside Paris), and introduced him to Picasso and the ideas behind Cubism. The visualisation of objects in terms of multiple perspectives, and the disjunction and fragmentation of forms as seen here, were basic principles of Cubism.
