The Nibelungenlied or Song of the Nibelungs is a German epic poem that tells the story of the dragon-slayer Siegfried at the court of the Burgundians. It recounts his hidden treasure and those who desire it; his eventual murder; and his wife Chriemhild’s revenge. In chapter 5, Siegfried meets the princess Chriemhild for the first time and kneels in adoration before her, as befits his lower rank.
