Artwork Information
An amateur artist’s model, Sophia Rawlings married Henry Fuseli in 1788. She was much younger than him and had not had the same intellectual and social opportunities that he had experienced, yet their marriage was long and happy. At one point, he foolishly showed more than a passing interest in their friend Mary Wollstonecraft, the 18th-century proto-feminist, but Sophia soon reined him in.
