Fuseli’s drawings are filled with images of sleep and its association with the world of dreams, when the imagination is unconstrained. He inscribed (in Greek) on one of his many drawings of his wife Sophia in which she wears a similar large hat, ‘Restlessly I chased the image of my dream through the passing fashions’. On a further work, he inscribed; ‘Mrs Fuseli Seated making a Gesture of Silence’.
