Artwork Information

As a young man, Massimo Campigli wrote for the Florentine Futurist periodical Lacerba, and met leading Futurists Umberto Boccioni and Carlo Carrà. After World War I, he went as a journalist to Paris, where he taught himself painting, initially focusing on the style of Picasso and Léger. He moved freely between Rome and Paris, his work gradually absorbing the influences of Etruscan art and antique wall paintings. The wasp-waisted figures in La dame bleu demonstrate this archaic quality.
