Artwork Information
This etching shows the Arch of Septimius Severus as part of a broader setting. The Church of SS. Martino and Luca, belonging to the Accademia of San Luca, is to the right, so that the ruins of Rome are dominated by the architectural splendours of Christianity.
The Accademia was given its first set of antique casts in 1598 and became a leading institution for studying the antique. This method of teaching became established throughout the west, and even Auckland continued the practice until the 1970s.
