Leonardo Coccorante was a Neapolitan painter who worked very much in the style of Viviano Codazzi. Although the scene recalls the Bay of Naples it is a capriccio (an imaginary composition formed from aspects of different places). This mode of landscape was popular among Italian landscape artists during this period because of the number of European tourists on the Grand Tour, who wanted a memento of their journey. Works such as this were hugely influential on the development of theatre design.
