Artwork Information
Woollaston first met Charles Brasch in June 1938, when he stayed with the artist for several days at his home in Mapua. This portrait was drawn the afternoon after Brasch left. Woollaston recorded that he did a number of sketches of Brasch while he was there, but only this one, done from memory, really meant something. A poet, publisher and philanthropist, Charles Brasch became a life-long friend and patron of the artist. (Intimate Portraits, 2005)
