Artwork Information
This portrait was made at the outset of WW II when Edith was pregnant with their second child, and the possibility of Woollaston being conscripted was a real threat. Her pensive figure has a strength and solidity that demonstrates her steadfastness despite the risks. Paul Cézanne’s influence is evident in the planes of colour used to describe Edith’s form.
