Portrait of the artist's wife

Artwork Information

This portrait was made at the outset of WW II when Edith was pregnant with their second child, and the possibility of Woollaston being conscripted was a real threat. Her pensive figure has a strength and solidity that demonstrates her steadfastness despite the risks. Paul Cézanne’s influence is evident in the planes of colour used to describe Edith’s form. (Intimate Portraits, 2005)
