Artwork Information
This etching from what has been called his 'Ingres period' exemplifies all those qualities, redolent of Classicism, that make this period of Picasso's prodigious printmaking. Although Ingres had a horror of anatomy, he was fascinated by ways in which both sides of the human form could be depicted at one time. This was also a prime objective of Cubism, and of course had been a lively debate between sculptors and painters as far back as the Renaissance.
