Artwork Information
It was Hayden's interest in formal simplification and pictorial construction in the manner of Cézanne which gradually led him to Cubism, initially through a meeting with Juan Gris. During WWI he spent time with Picasso and other foreign artists continuing to work in Paris. His Cubist paintings, which he produced until 1922, illustrate a sensuous quality of colour, and are mostly based on still-life objects such as bottles, guitars, newspapers and pipes.
