The photograph Fiji Umbrella plays with shifts in scale and visual expectation. One sees immediately that the photograph is an image of a beach frontage where people go to relax, but it seems mysteriously abandoned. Traces of foot traffic are present everywhere but no person is in sight. The location appears to be a beach lagoon at low tide; with a sea reef on the horizon.

In a humorous way, the beach umbrellas are thatched with coconut palm leaves, but with nothing beneath them appear like floating island sculptures. In mixing observation with visual wit, Peryer creates a delightful evocation of a Fijian summer at an empty tourist spot.
