Head of a Woman (Tête de femme)

Artwork Information

The subject of this print was one of the Saltimbanques, a travelling troupe of street perfomers from Spain and southern France whom Picasso observed during visits to the Cirque Médrano. The young woman’s fine facial features are delicately modelled with a sophisticated combination of long, straight, vertical strokes across the side of the face and shorter, directional marks around the eye, nose and mouth. Caught by the artist in a moment of reflection, her gaze and quiet attitude suggests the inward direction of her thoughts. (Headspace, 2002)
