Artwork Information
Like many of the artists working in Paris during the Cubist period and beyond, Moore was fascinated by African sculpture. This is the earliest known work by the sculptor and only three casts were made from the original terracotta head. It demonstrates the direct influence of African carving which Moore studied constantly while a student at the Royal College of Art, but it also shows Moore's creative grasp of the monumental, translating the particular into the universal.
