Artwork Information
It is often said that Chagall, in company with de Chirico, pointed the way to Surrealism. Certainly Chagall's work from the 1920s contains strong elements of fantasy which the poet Apollinaire termed 'surnaturel'. However Chagall refused to join the Surrealists, wary of their deliberate focus on the subconscious mind. His figures tend to defy gravity, floating in space.
