Marc Chagall
Joseph and Potiphar's Wife

Artwork Information
Chagall moved to Paris in 1923 where he also came under the wing of Ambroise Vollard. Between 1931 and 1956 Chagall made 105 plates for Illustrations to the Bible, partly drawing on the folkloric imagery of his native Russia. The story of Joseph and his attempted seduction by Potiphar's wife was a popular Old Testament theme, and one that Chagall would have been familiar with from his Jewish schooling.
