Above Aramoana depicts a female figure with windswept and wild hair surrounded by rough waters. The expression of the woman is troubled and her hand is raised as if to cover her mouth. The hand is in fact holding a mask in front of the woman’s face providing even more emotional gravity to the painting. The location Aramoana is in Dunedin where the artist lived for a time.

The paint is rough in appearance because of the way she has mixed natural pigments with prepared paint and applied a push and pull technique to create an impasto surface. This work shows the artist experimenting also with dripping paint down the surface and with layers of paint and glazes.
