Mother and Child

Artwork Information

Gilman was strongly influenced by the work of Gauguin and Van Gogh, which he saw at the Manet and the Post-Impressionists exhibition (1912). He was a notable painter in the inner circle of 'The Camden Town Group', who were united in rebellion against the rigid academic standards of early 20th-century Britain. He balanced his concern with the abstract qualities of broad planes and rich mosaics of colour, with human intimacy, as seen here in this painting of his wife Sylvia and their son John.
