Polynesian Mask

1947

Artwork Information

Few Pākehā artists were carving with wood in the 1940s. Polynesian Mask is one of the first objects created by Molly Macalister using an indigenous wood, in this case the warmly toned kauri. First owned by Helen Hitchings, New Zealand’s pioneering contemporary art dealer, the sculpture combines a

modernist simplification of form with traditional South Pacific subject matter.
