Artwork Information
These window frames were gathered in Avondale, Auckland, from one of the area’s last remaining demolition yards. Windows, frames and lights have featured in Bill Culbert’s work since the late 1960s. By using domestic window frames, he recalls an everyday experience of light. Culbert’s light and
found-object sculptures often use illumination as a force. By juxtaposing windows that let light in and neon which projects light, he contrasts the qualities of natural and artificial light. Culbert is interested in light’s sources and how they alter the ways in which we see.
