The landscape as an independent subject in Italian painting developed in the seventeenth century. This is one of several Grimaldi etchings which erroneously bear the name of Titian as the designer. Peter Tomory points out in his 1986 catalogue that in fact they are homages to Titian, rather than derived from the Venetian artist. He noted that the landscape in the background is typical of his work, whereas the boat, the lutenist and the man pushing off from the bank are motifs drawn directly from Annibale Carracci.
