While the death of Penthesilea is not of great importance to the story of the Trojan War, Marian Maguire uses it to draw out the personal tragedy of war. Achilles’ emotional state is emphasised by the location of this scene in Doubtful Sound, with its obvious references to questioning one's actions. (Southern Myths, 2005)
