Flute Mask

Flute Mask

Artwork Information

The middle Ramu river area of the Madang province in Papua New Guinea is well known for its flute masks. This example from the Misingi village was made by an unknown artist of the Breri language group. The projections are renderings of foliage, through which the face of an ancestor can be seen. (Te Moananui a Kiwa, 2005)
