The Haunt of the Moa, a scene in Puriri Forest

Artwork Information

Kennett Watkins was a pioneer of a specific school of New Zealand landscape art, focussing on the representation of subjects from the country’s history. This painting is an imagined view that evokes a pre-colonial past. The extinct flightless moa is depicted roaming the dark and dank puriri forest, stalked by Māori hunters. (Te Moananui a Kiwa, 2005)
