While Hollar may have visited Groenendael Abbey during his time in Antwerp, his three prints depicting scenes near Antwerp, Op de Maese and Dordrecht are copies of paintings. Known as ‘reproductive prints’, these catered to public interest in paintings by well-known artists.

As a subject, landscape found its most significant early advocates among Dutch and Flemish artists. The flat landscape of the Low Countries meant that the sky and miscellaneous details were emphasised in the place of dramatic scenery.
