Winter: Parade Ground

Artwork Information

Although he had not yet mastered perspective, Hollar’s

interest in detailed representations of urban life is

evident in these two prints. Both views are full of people

at work and play: merchants trade barrels of wine on

the riverbank and children throw snowballs as decorated

sleighs parade about the town square.

Published just two years after leaving Prague, Hollar’s Four Seasons records views of Strasbourg, where he lived at the time. The seasonal theme gave artists the opportunity to depict activities that were customary atparticular times of the year.
