Strafford’s fall undermined the king’s position and

encouraged those who had opposed the monarch’s

personal rule of the preceding years. The public revelled

in the unpopular earl’s demise and gathered in large

numbers to watch the spectacle of his execution on

Tower Hill in London.

Hollar almost never recorded scenes of violence,

but this image would have been a popular record of

an important political event. As with the Trial, it was

published again in Frankfurt with German inscriptions.
