Artwork Information
Dating to the mid-1660s, Hollar’s etching of Bourchier’s
monument was only published in 1677 – the year the
artist died. Created for Francis Sandford’s book A
Genealogical History of the Kings of England, publication
appears to have been much delayed by the Great Fire of
1666.
Hollar etched 19 other plates for Sandford’s book and
these include interiors, stained glass windows and
royal seals. Antiquarianism embraced many aspects of
England’s history, and Hollar was one of the leading
artists connected with such projects.
