Dutch Cargo Ships

Artwork Information

Hollar often travelled by boat along rivers and canals as well as on the open sea, avoiding the poor roads and the threat of thieves and highwaymen. Ships such as these plied the waters off the Netherlands, carrying passengers and merchandise. Similar vessels would have been used to cross the English Channel, which Hollar did a number of times. Storms, strong winds and tides meant that the crossing could take many days, and sometimes had to be abandoned altogether.
