Hollar appreciated the landscape for its own sake and did not limit himself to human interventions such as buildings. Indeed, apart from one ruined church, both of these prints are almost wholly concerned with the natural environment.

These two images come from an untitled series of eight views of the sea and reflect Hollar’s keen interest in a subject that was wholly new to him. Hollar went on to experience many sea voyages, particularly travelling between England and the Continent, beginning with his departure from the Netherlands for England in December 1636.
