Placing himself at an imaginary, elevated viewpoint, Hollar has depicted both the south and north banks of the River Thames, showing much of the historic city. The church of St Mary Overy (from where he drew many of his views of the capital) is found to the left of London Bridge. The print is labelled so that we can identify key buildings. After the Great Fire in 1666, Hollar’s views of London became important records of the city in its lost mediaeval and Elizabethan form.
