Wright of Derby was famous for his nocturnal paintings that depicted unusual light sources such as candles, lamps and fires. He was also an accomplished portraitist, serving the factory owners and merchants of the Midlands. The Honorable Mrs Boyle is a sensitive portrait, the soft tones in her face complemented by the delicate handling of her costume.
