This bronze is a version of the Borghese Gladiator by the sculptor Agasias, a marble now in the Louvre. One of the two most significant sculptures in the Villa Borghese in Rome, it remained the most admired work of antiquity in the villa in the 17th and 18th centuries, when it was purchased by Napoleon Bonaparte, brother-in-law of Prince Camillo Borghese.
