Nuclear Rosary - White Sunday

Artwork information

An essential part of Catholic practice, the rosary is taken here as a symbol for the Church as a whole. The work intersperses flowers, which glow in the dark as if contaminated by radiation, with rosary beads. Hastings-McFall comments on the effect the Church has had in Pacific communities, stating ‘These works equate the often disruptive Christian missionising of old with yet another arrogant and destructive colonist visitation on the Pacific—that of nuclear testing and the transport of nuclear waste.’ (Flaunt, 2003)
