W D Hammond
Sea chest

Artwork Detail
This painting of the wild and freezing sub-Antarctic ocean shows a sperm whale diving underwater. By presenting a homage to nineteenth century depictions of whaling, Hammond recalls the traditions of maritime art made below the deck in sailors’ quarters at some past time. The pine door on which the painting was created looks as if it may once have been a fragment of some long-lost maritime coffer. (Golden, 2004)
