Raised in Gisborne, Allan Barns-Graham trained at the Slade in London and Glasgow School of Art. He returned to New Zealand in 1930 and set himself up as painter in Auckland, specialising in portraits. This elegant young woman, her hair fashionable coiffed, is his sister Win.
